Born September 3, 1791 in Connecticut. He graduated from Fairfield Medical School in New York where he practiced for awhile. In 1817, he moved to New Orleans where he boarded a boat to go up the Red River. In 1819, he settled in Hempstead County near Washington. He established a crude hospital on his farm composed of log cabins built in a circle. He also used boiling water to create antiseptic conditions in his hospital. On his farm, he experimented with silkworms as well as with various fruits and vegetables. Between January 1, 1840 and 1860, he kept daily records of the weather conditions near Washington which were published by the Smithsonian Institution in 1860. When the Civil War began he openly criticized the radicals on both sides and argued against fighting for slavery. He died on August 18, 1867 and was buried on his farm.
